Get the door height wrong and the building is worthless for its only purpose. This is the one build where measuring twice is not a cliché.
An RV garage is a simple building with one unforgiving requirement. Everything else can be adjusted later; a door that is four inches too short cannot.
The first measurement is your vehicle's true height, including the air conditioner, the satellite dome, the vent covers and anything else on the roof. Manufacturer specifications routinely list a height that excludes rooftop equipment. Measure the actual vehicle, on level ground, at the tallest point.
The second is the door height, which needs clearance above the measured height for the door itself plus a margin for the approach. The third is the interior clear height, which is not the same as the door height, because the door opener, the track and the header all live above the opening.
Then there is the part people miss entirely: getting the vehicle in. A 40 foot coach needs room to line up outside the building. If the approach requires a turn, the apron and the driveway matter as much as the door, and that is a site problem rather than a building problem.
Included
A 12, 14 or 16 foot high overhead door with a header engineered for the span and the snow load above it, plus high-lift or vertical-lift track where interior height is tight.
Walls at 16 to 18 feet carry more wind load and need real bracing. The framing, the sheathing schedule and the truss connections all get designed for the height rather than scaled up from a garage.
A slab and apron sized so the vehicle can line up and enter straight, with grade worked out so the coach does not scrape on entry.
Sizing
Class A coaches commonly run 12 to 13 feet 6 inches tall with rooftop equipment, and 33 to 45 feet long. Fifth wheels are often 13 feet or a little over. A toy hauler with a rooftop deck can be taller still. Those are typical figures, not a promise about your vehicle, which is exactly the point: measure yours.
Length drives the building more than most people expect. A 45 foot coach in a 45 foot building leaves nothing at either end, and the door has to close behind it. Add working room at the front, room to walk around the back, and space for the things that inevitably get stored alongside.
Width is usually the easiest of the three, but remember slide-outs. If you want to be able to extend a slide inside the building, the width requirement jumps.

Process
Height at the tallest rooftop point, length, width, and width with slides extended if you want to use them inside.
Where the vehicle comes from, whether it can enter straight, and what the grade does at the apron.
Door height, lift type, and the interior height needed above it for track and opener.
Bracing, header span and truss connections designed for the wall height and site snow load.
City building permit, or a county land use permit where a zoning district applies. Height limits are worth checking early.
Footings and slab, tall wall framing, roof, envelope, door installation and opener commissioning.
Before you commit
An RV garage is the build most likely to run into a height restriction, because it is genuinely tall. Some county zoning districts cap accessory building height well below what a 16 foot door needs, and the cap is measured from average finished grade rather than from the floor.
That question should be asked before anything is drawn. It is not always fatal: dropping the floor slightly, using vertical-lift track to reduce required interior height, or shifting the building to a lower part of the lot can all recover a foot or two.
The other early question is the septic system. On unincorporated ground, a building this long often collides with the drainfield or its required replacement area, and moving a drainfield is far more expensive than moving a building.
If you are on acreage where a shorter, wider post-frame building would work, that is often a better value for the same enclosed volume. We will say so.
Cost
The RV garage calculator asks for door height and building length separately, because those two drive cost far more than floor area does.
Questions
Measure your vehicle at its tallest rooftop point, then add clearance. A 14 foot door covers most Class A coaches and fifth wheels comfortably. A 16 foot door covers almost anything and future-proofs the building if you may change vehicles.
Do not use the manufacturer's published height. It usually excludes air conditioners and vent covers, which is exactly what hits the header.
Start from the detached garage bands and add for height. An unheated RV garage shell runs about $56 to $92 per square foot, with the premium over a standard garage coming from tall wall framing, bracing, the door and its header.
Length is the other multiplier. A building sized for a 45 foot coach is roughly twice the footprint of a two-car garage.
Yes, and the calculation is different from a shop. The volume is large and the door is a big cold surface, so an insulated door and a well-detailed envelope matter more than the heater size.
Many owners heat to a holding temperature rather than a working temperature, which is cheaper and prevents freeze damage. If you plan to work in there, treat it as a shop and insulate the slab.
It depends entirely on jurisdiction. Inside Bozeman, height is governed by the Unified Development Code that took effect on 1 February 2026. In unincorporated Gallatin County it depends on the zoning district, and some rural districts have notably restrictive accessory building height limits.

It is often the best value in the whole project. A covered lean-to adds sheltered space for a boat, a trailer or firewood at a fraction of the cost per square foot of enclosed space, and it can be framed as part of the main roof structure.
Decide at design, because it changes the truss package.
Post-frame often wins here. Tall walls and long clear spans are exactly what post-frame construction is efficient at, and the finish level on an RV garage is usually simpler than on a heated shop.
On a city lot, or where the building has to match a house, stick framing is generally the better fit.
