Frost depth follows the City of Bozeman published requirement, which we treat as the regional standard because the ground freezes the same depth on either side of a jurisdiction line.
One census note first, because it trips people up. Amsterdam-Churchill is no longer a single census place. For the 2020 census it was split into Churchill CDP with 1,030 people and Amsterdam CDP with 206. Any combined "Amsterdam-Churchill" population figure you find is pre-2020.
The settlement runs as a roughly 14 mile line south from Manhattan across the western Gallatin Valley. Churchill sits on the local high point, which is where the name came from, and Amsterdam is the retail centre. It is bench and terrace ground bounded by Camp Creek, Godfrey Creek and the Valley Ditch, with no major river running through it.
That geology is worth dwelling on because it is the best building ground we work on. The Amsterdam soil series has its type location in Gallatin County: parent material of alluvium, lacustrine deposits or loess mixed with volcanic ash, well drained, occurring on alluvial fans, stream terraces and lake terraces. Deep, well-drained silt loam over fan material, with no mapped major-river floodplain. The constraints here are creeks and irrigation ditches, not a river.
The area was settled by Dutch farmers in the early 1890s, recruited by the Manhattan Malting Company which bought 13,000 acres to grow malting barley. Nearly half the population reports Dutch ancestry. The practical consequence for our work is that this is farmstead country: properties here typically already have barns, machine sheds and shops, so the conversation is more often about replacing or adding to an existing outbuilding cluster than about putting the first one on a bare lot.

Gallatin County Planning. Whether a zoning district covers a given parcel needs confirming, because the county has 22 districts and coverage is not uniform. Where one applies, a land use permit is required.
Most properties here already have barns and machine sheds. Siting a new shop is usually about how it sits with the existing cluster and the yard circulation rather than about a blank site.

If the parcel is inside a county zoning district you still need a land use permit. Whether a district covers your ground here is worth confirming with county planning rather than assuming either way.

It also has limits: a building that serves a residence rather than the agricultural operation is not a farm building because it sits on a farm. If the use is mixed, get the classification confirmed before you build.
Better than most of the valley. The Amsterdam series is deep, well-drained silt loam formed on fans and terraces, and it is the type location for that series. Well-drained material with no major-river floodplain is a good starting point for a foundation.
Footings still go to frost depth, and a site check still applies, but the ground here is generally cooperative.
That is usually the real design question here, and it is worth taking seriously. Yard circulation, where equipment turns, prevailing wind and snow drift off existing roofs all matter more than the elevation drawing does.
We walk the whole cluster rather than just the proposed footprint, because a building placed correctly relative to what is already there is worth more than one placed to a survey line.
This is bench and terrace ground in the western valley, generally between the Manhattan station at 4,232 feet reading 20.7 psf and the Belgrade Airport station at 4,427 feet reading 33.3 psf.
Those are station research values rather than adopted loads. We pull a site figure from the coordinates and engineer to it, which on a wide-span farm shop matters more than it does on a two-car garage.
