Compare stick framing against post frame at your size and finish level, with clear height and in-floor heat priced separately because those are what actually move the number.
No obligation. Every estimate starts with a walkthrough of the lot, the access and where the building can actually sit.
Gallatin County, MTCalculator
Switch the construction method and watch the number move. Post frame gets more efficient the wider and plainer the building.
These are planning estimates, not quotes. Every figure comes from published cost bands for the Gallatin Valley in 2026. A calculator cannot see your ground, your access, your utilities or your drawings, and it does not know what a geotechnical report will find. Treat the range as a way to decide whether a project is worth pursuing, not as a price.
Why these numbers
A shop is priced on two different bands depending on how it is built. Post-frame construction runs $32 to $62 per square foot, stick framing on a frost wall runs $48 to $70 as a shell and rises with finish.
The interesting part is what happens as you add finish. Post frame is efficient when the building is wide, plain and mostly unheated. Once it is insulated, drywalled and heated year round, the insulation detailing around the columns eats into the saving and the two methods converge. The calculator shows that rather than asserting it.
Clear height is priced separately because it is a structural question, not a finish question. Going from a 10 foot wall to 14 changes the framing, the bracing and the wind load on the building, and it is the change people most often wish they had made.
In-floor radiant heat is an option on the insulated and finished tiers and is already included in the working shop tier, so it cannot be added twice. That is deliberate: the most common pricing error in this trade is stacking an upgrade onto a rate that already contains it.
Ranges reflect what a detached garage costs to build in the Gallatin Valley in 2026, including footings to 36 inches, framing, roofing, siding, overhead doors and normal permit costs. They exclude long utility runs, difficult access, septic work and site grading beyond the building pad. For national context, HomeGuide, 2026 national cost guide for a two-car detached garage puts a two-car detached garage at $20,000 to $57,600 with an average near $38,800. Bozeman sits at the upper half of that range, and a heated shop finish goes past the top of it.
Cost factors
Three more feet of wall is a small percentage of the total during framing and cannot be added afterwards. If a lift is even a possibility, price 14 feet and decide with the number in front of you.
The in-floor loop is stapled down before the pour. After the slab is placed the option is gone and the alternative is a heater blowing warm air at your head. Under-slab insulation is what makes it economical to run.
Post frame wins on wide, plain, rural buildings. Stick framing wins when the shop is heated, finished and has to sit sensibly next to a house.
Next step
Height, power, slab thickness and heat are the four decisions that matter. We put them in writing so you can compare quotes properly.
Questions
As a stick-framed working shop with in-floor heat and 14 foot walls, roughly $137,000 to $202,000 including a county land use permit. As an unheated post-frame shell of the same footprint, far less.
Change the finish tier in the calculator and the gap becomes obvious. Finish level, not size, is what moves the cost per square foot.
For a large, plain, unheated building, yes, and by a lot. A 40 by 60 post-frame shell runs about $84,000 to $110,000 against a stick-framed shell of the same size at a higher band.
The saving narrows sharply once the building is insulated, drywalled and heated, because insulating around post-frame columns is more work than insulating a stud wall.
Because the working shop tier already includes it, and adding it again would inflate the total by an amount that does not exist. It is also not offered on the unheated shell, since heating an uninsulated building is not something we would price as an option.
That gating is deliberate. Stacking an upgrade onto a rate that already contains it is the most common way calculators overstate a price.
It depends what runs at the same time. A welder and a compressor together will make a 60 amp feed unhappy. Most working shops here get a 100 to 200 amp sub-panel.
Size the feed and the trench once. Doing it twice costs far more than doing it generously the first time.
No, and that is deliberate. On city sewer it is a plumbing permit and a connection. On a septic system it is a capacity question for the health department, and the answer can change where the building sits.
Raise it with us early and we will price it against your actual situation rather than an average.
