RV Garage Cost Calculator, Bozeman and Gallatin County

Door height and building length drive this far more than floor area does. Set both from your actual vehicle, not from a brochure figure.

No obligation. Every estimate starts with a walkthrough of the lot, the access and where the building can actually sit.

Calculator

Price an RV garage

Measure your vehicle at its tallest rooftop point before you set the door height. Published vehicle heights usually exclude the air conditioner.

These are planning estimates, not quotes. Every figure comes from published cost bands for the Gallatin Valley in 2026. A calculator cannot see your ground, your access, your utilities or your drawings, and it does not know what a geotechnical report will find. Treat the range as a way to decide whether a project is worth pursuing, not as a price.

Why these numbers

Why door height costs more than a door

Raising the door from 12 feet to 16 does three things, and only one of them is the door. The walls get taller, which means more framing and more sheathing. The building catches more wind, which means real bracing rather than nominal. And the header over the opening spans the same width under a heavier load from further up.

So the calculator prices the door as an upgrade line and prices the tall wall framing separately as a cost per square foot of footprint. Both scale with the building, which is why a long RV garage with a tall door is a genuinely different price from a garage with the same floor area.

Post frame is offered first here because it is usually the better value for a tall, plain building, which is exactly what most RV garages are. Stick framing is the right answer on a city lot or where the building has to sit sensibly next to a house.

The number this calculator cannot produce is whether you are allowed to build it. Some county zoning districts cap accessory building height well below what a 16 foot door needs, measured from average finished grade rather than from the floor. That question goes first.

Published cost bands
Unheated shell: foundation, frame, roof, siding, doors$48 to $70 / sq ft
Insulated, drywalled, wired$66 to $95 / sq ft
Finished interior, heated$88 to $128 / sq ft
Working shop finish with in-floor heat$108 to $158 / sq ft
Post-frame (pole barn) equivalent$32 to $62 / sq ft
Loft or bonus room, added per sq ft of loft$45 to $82 / sq ft
Living space above a garage (ADU portion)$190 to $330 / sq ft
Slab and footings only$9 to $18 / sq ft

Ranges reflect what a detached garage costs to build in the Gallatin Valley in 2026, including footings to 36 inches, framing, roofing, siding, overhead doors and normal permit costs. They exclude long utility runs, difficult access, septic work and site grading beyond the building pad. For national context, HomeGuide, 2026 national cost guide for a two-car detached garage puts a two-car detached garage at $20,000 to $57,600 with an average near $38,800. Bozeman sits at the upper half of that range, and a heated shop finish goes past the top of it.

Cost factors

What moves the number most

Door height

Measure the vehicle

Manufacturer heights routinely exclude the air conditioner, satellite dome and vent covers. Measure the actual vehicle at its tallest point on level ground, then add clearance for the door and the track.

Length

Longer than the coach

A 45 foot coach in a 45 foot building leaves nothing at either end and the door still has to close. Add working room at the front and space to walk around the back.

Approach

Getting it in

A long coach needs room to line up outside. If the approach requires a turn, the apron and the driveway matter as much as the door, and that is a site problem rather than a building one.

Next step

Check the height limit before anything else

On an RV garage, the height allowed by the zoning district decides whether the project exists. We check that first, before design.

Questions

About these costs

What does an RV garage cost?

A 20 by 48 post-frame shell with a 14 foot door on unzoned county ground runs roughly $44,000 to $61,000. The same footprint stick framed and insulated with a 16 foot door inside Bozeman city limits is about $86,000 to $126,000.

Door height and construction method move it more than floor area does.

How tall should the door be?

Measure your vehicle at its tallest rooftop point, including the air conditioner and vent covers, then allow clearance above it. A 14 foot door covers most Class A coaches and fifth wheels. A 16 foot door covers almost anything and future-proofs the building.

Interior clear height needs to exceed the door height by two to three feet for the track and opener.

Will a height limit stop me?

It can, and it is the first thing to check. Some county zoning districts cap accessory building height well below what a 16 foot door needs, and the measurement is usually taken from average finished grade rather than from the floor slab.

Options exist when it is tight: dropping the floor, vertical-lift track to reduce required interior height, or moving the building to a lower part of the lot. All of them need to be considered before design, not after.

Is the lean-to worth it?

Often the best value in the project. A covered lean-to gives sheltered space for a boat, a trailer or firewood at a fraction of the cost per square foot of enclosed space, and it can be framed into the main roof structure.

Decide at design, because it changes the truss package.

Can I heat an RV garage?

Yes, and most owners heat to a holding temperature rather than a working temperature. The volume is large and the door is a big cold surface, so an insulated door and a well-detailed envelope matter more than heater size.

If you plan to work in there, treat it as a shop and insulate the slab.
