These are planning estimates, not quotes. Every figure comes from published cost bands for the Gallatin Valley in 2026. Why these numbers
Raising the door from 12 feet to 16 does three things, and only one of them is the door. The walls get taller, which means more framing and more sheathing. The building catches more wind, which means real bracing rather than nominal. And the header over the opening spans the same width under a heavier load from further up.
So the calculator prices the door as an upgrade line and prices the tall wall framing separately as a cost per square foot of footprint. Both scale with the building, which is why a long RV garage with a tall door is a genuinely different price from a garage with the same floor area.
Post frame is offered first here because it is usually the better value for a tall, plain building, which is exactly what most RV garages are. Stick framing is the right answer on a city lot or where the building has to sit sensibly next to a house.
The number this calculator cannot produce is whether you are allowed to build it. Some county zoning districts cap accessory building height well below what a 16 foot door needs, measured from average finished grade rather than from the floor. That question goes first.
Ranges reflect what a detached garage costs to build in the Gallatin Valley in 2026, including footings to 36 inches, framing, roofing, siding, overhead doors and normal permit costs. Cost factors
Manufacturer heights routinely exclude the air conditioner, satellite dome and vent covers. Measure the actual vehicle at its tallest point on level ground, then add clearance for the door and the track.
A 45 foot coach in a 45 foot building leaves nothing at either end and the door still has to close. Add working room at the front and space to walk around the back.
A long coach needs room to line up outside. If the approach requires a turn, the apron and the driveway matter as much as the door, and that is a site problem rather than a building one.

Yes, and most owners heat to a holding temperature rather than a working temperature. The volume is large and the door is a big cold surface, so an insulated door and a well-detailed envelope matter more than heater size.
